Situated in the village of Vothonas, on the road that leads to the settlement of Kamari, the underground wine museum of Santorini, unique in its kind in Greece, exhibits the history of local wine and the life of vine growers from the 17th century to the 20th century. The museum is housed in Volcan Wines winery. The building combines traditional aesthetics with functional infrastructures. Founded in 1870 by Gregoris and Dimitris Koutsoyannopoulos, the winery operates, today, under the supervision of George Koutsoyannopoulos.

It is situated 6 meters below the Earth’s surface and extends for 300 m. There are mobile and immobile effigies which provide a lively image of viniculture from 1660 to 1970. Moreover, self-guided audio tour systems are available and help you gain insight into winemaking on the island of Santorini.
The museum also displays many photographs, newspaper extracts of past eras about viniculture on Santorini, old objects, including tools used for making barrels and baskets, and household utensils.
